Ensuring you receive emails
Last update: 28/1/2019
Sometimes, the survey invites you were hoping to receive, may accidentally be sent to the spam folder. In order to prevent this – as a general rule of thumb – add email@example.com to your address or contact list in your email software. If that doesn’t work, read on for further tips.
Don’t use Boxbe. Boxbe requires that we go through a manual process in order to ensure an email is delivered to you. Unfortunately since there are so many participants in surveys, this is not feasible. So if you are using Boxbe, please remove the service and set up an intelligent spam filter, such as a Bayesian filter (see for example Thunderbird’s email filter).
Bayesian filters are a more intelligent way to filter spam
Bayesian filters adapt to the subtleties of your specific preferences. The Thunderbird email client is an excellent example of a Bayesian email filter that works better than the standard server-level filters. This is because it learns your preferences, rather than relying on the average persons preferences. Here is a handy guide to setting up a spam filter in Thunderbird email client. You simply indicate which emails are junk and which are not, and the system learns what emails you like and which emails you don’t like by analysing the keywords in the email. For instance if you repeatedly indicate that emails containing adverts about ‘time share’ are junk, but you indicate that adverts about ‘cosmetics’ are not, it actually learns this subtlety in your preferences, instead of just filtering everything as a traditional server side filter would. It uses a type of Bayesian filter.
Here are the steps as outlined by Lifewire:
- Turn on the Spam Filter in Mozilla Thunderbird
- To have Mozilla Thunderbird filter junk mail for you:
- Select Preferences > Account Settings from the Thunderbird hamburger menu.
- For each account go to the Junk Settings category under the desired account and make sure Enable adaptive junk mail controls for this account is checked.
- Click OK.
If you use Gmail instead of a desktop email client, follow these steps recommended by Google:
If an email was incorrectly marked as spam, follow the steps below to remove it from Spam.
To stop a message from being sent to Spam in the future, you can:
Filter these messages
You may also find emails being sorted into different tabs, such as ‘promotions’. To change this see this article.
In the case of the Yahoo email service, the process of avoiding invites landing in your spam folder is fairly easy. According to Yahoo’s help file you just need to follow these three steps.
- Click on the Spam folder.
- Select the email.
- Click Not Spam at the top of the page.
- The email will return to your Inbox.
